Enjoy Mountain West Whiskey Festival at The Hotel Alex Johnson: Historic Charm in Downtown Rapid City
Built in 1927, during the heart of prohibition, our hotel combines historic architecture with handcrafted Native American art in tribute to the area’s Lakota and Sioux culture. Roughly 200 brands of whiskey, Scotch and bourbon will be served throughout the hotel in these settings:
Lincoln / Jefferson Room – 2nd Floor
An elegant and intimate setting, the Lincoln and Jefferson Rooms set the tone for refined indulgence. Jefferson will feature an array of seafood including fresh oysters from Dakota Seafood, offering a perfect pairing to your whisky experience. The space is wrapped in antique French wallpaper inspired by the original design in Abraham Lincoln’s historic home, adding a layer of timeless character and charm.
Yesterday’s Ballroom – 2nd Floor
The heart of Whisky Fest, Yesterday’s Ballroom is the most versatile space in the hotel. From floating bars to burlesque and aerial performances, this room has transformed into hundreds of unique layouts over the years. For Whisky Fest, it will host 20+ booths and a spectacular food presentation, creating a vibrant, energetic hub for tasting and discovery.
Washington / Rushmore Room – 3rd Floor
Located on the third floor, the Washington and Rushmore Rooms provide an elevated and relaxed environment within the event. This space will feature additional food offerings (details coming soon) and serves as a natural pause point to continue your tasting journey while enjoying a different perspective of the festival.
Starbucks
A familiar favorite with a spirited twist. Starbucks will feature an interactive affogato action station, where guests can mix espresso, ice cream, and their favorite flavored whisky. Alongside the affogatos, enjoy an array of sweets and creative coffee concoctions designed to balance bold flavors with indulgent comfort.
Juniper at Vertex – Platinum Members Only
The pinnacle of the property and an exclusive experience reserved for Platinum members. Juniper at Vertex offers a refined atmosphere with two levels, two outdoor patios with firepits, and a curated booth hosted by Tinder Box Cigar Bar. Guests will enjoy Charcuterie tables and butlered small plates from Juniper, alongside the most exclusive whisky bottles to hit West River, South Dakota, all paired with unmatched ambiance and service.
Presidential Suite – 9th Floor (Room 900)
Steeped in history and recently remodeled, the Presidential Suite was once the temporary home of eight U.S. Presidents. This iconic space features two sleeping rooms, a spacious living area, an executive dining table, and a full kitchen, creating an intimate yet grand setting. Guests will enjoy chef-driven small plates by Chef Sarah Pethick of The Box Event Center, thoughtfully paired with an exclusive Jack Daniel’s tasting hosted by Jed, Master Taster at Jack Daniel’s, highlighted by a rare pour of Weller Millennium. This highly limited experience will be offered in 45-minute time slots, awarded to raffle winners with the opportunity to purchase access.
